Full Day Kindergarten

I had the pleasure of carrying Senate Bill 248 to passage by the House, which changes the school distribution formula to give full weight to full day kindergarten students in 2015. This means most school districts in Oregon will make full day kindergarten available. There is no dispute that full day kindergarten is among the very best investments we can make to set students up for future success, and I am immensely proud that we were able to take this step.

Higher Education

In 2010 I was appointed Co-Chair of the legislative work group on higher education. Our bipartisan group worked for months to craft and introduce three bills. Watch my floor speech about the passage of SB 242.

Portland City Club

In September 2009 I joined the Portland City Club and Representatives Jules Kopel Bailey, Chris Garret and Ben Cannon to talk about the role of young leaders in the legislature. I also briefly reflected on my experiences as a Committee Chair and a member of the House Democratic Leadership team. You can listen to the audio here.

Revenue Negotiations

This session, I played a key role in negotiating a settlement to ensure the passage of important revenue raising measures that limited the scope of cuts we were forced to make to the state budget. You can listen to the OPB story here or read the transcript here.

Rainy Day Fund

This June, I drafted House Bill 2073 to create the first dedicated funding source for Oregon's Rainy Day Fund. You can view my House floor speech below.

EEAST

In May 2009, I participated in a press conference with US Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Reps. Mary Nolan and Jules Bailey to discuss the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Technology Act (EEAST) that I helped write and pass during the 2009 legislative session. I start speaking at the 0:58 mark.

Public Affairs Forum

This March I visited the Washington County Public Affairs Forum where I discussed my involvement with the Oregon Innovation Council (Oregon InC) as well as outlined plans for the EEAST package I discussed above.
