Perspectives at 35...
When I turned 30 in 2005, I had no idea what life had in store for me over the next five years. The good people of Oregon’s 27th district elected me to the State Legislature. I married Heidi and we bought a lovely home in Whitford Park. We welcomed our daughter Annika, and lost my father, my mentor and role model.
As I campaign for another opportunity to represent you and your interests in Salem this fall, I wanted to share with you a few observations that help guide me, drawn from what I’ve learned the past few years.
On a personal level, Annika has helped me focus on what truly matters. First, stick to the basics…when her basic needs are met, Annika is usually content. Second, don’t fix it if it “ain’t broke”…if something works to get Annika to sleep once, do it again. Third, trust your instincts…Annika can walk several steps (and the number is increasing daily) when she doesn’t stop to think about what she’s doing. But once she stops, she drops.
The lessons my father taught me, especially how important it is to understand where we came from and what forces have shaped our lives, and the daily observation of the development of a young child, help guide me as I move forward with my life. And they provide context and direction for me as I continue to serve as state representative.
On a professional level, I've always known, but understand in new ways that I represent all the people of District 27, not just Democrats. I’ve learned it is therefore vital to listen to all sides of the issues, regardless of political partisanship. It is important to make decisions for the common good, not for political gain and to seek opportunities to achieve real progress, even on challenging issues like the Rainy Day Fund.
The priority for me has always been the long run and allowing every Oregonian to live up to his or her full potential. My focus is on job creation, and economic development. Enormous opportunities are in front of us if we can reinvigorate our Oregon way of creativity and innovation. That’s the way to build a better Oregon.
I have been honored to represent Oregon’s 27th House District, for four years, and with your help and financial support, I intend to continue doing just that. Since I first ran for office, more than 1,000 individuals have contributed to our campaign. If you are one of the one thousand – thank you, I appreciate your continued financial support and encouragement.
If you have not had the opportunity to donate, I am asking now for your support. We have a very active opponent this election and we need your financial contribution to insure we are able to get our message out to our voters with Town Halls, signs and mail.
There is much work to be done in Salem and throughout our great state, and with your support I am optimistic we can achieve lasting improvements for ourselves and our children.
In honor of my 35th birthday, I encourage you to donate $35, $70, $135 or how about $535?
PS. - Don’t forget about the political tax credit. This means that you can contribute to our campaign and then get it back when you file your Oregon state taxes. Married couples can contribute $100 and have it credited too. For more information please check out www.oregontaxcredit.com.

I am running to be your voice: to bring your priorities, ideas and vision for Oregon’s future to your legislature.
